Let's dwell together! We discovered DwellStudio a few years ago when we were expecting. It was one of the very few companies at the time that offered moms modern options for play and decor. Just a few short years later, this company's offerings have multiplied and we couldn't be happier. Modern, stylish and easy on the eye, we love dwelling with them. Meet Christiane Lemieux, founder of DwellStudio and the author of Undecorate.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE DWELLSTUDIO?
I started DwellStudio because I was designing for a home company and wanted to do something more modern than my job would allow. I also saw a hole in the market at that time for this more modern look and decided to try and fill it. I went into it with great experience and good manufacturers so I was somewhat prepared but it has been an adventure.
WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME?
I wanted something short and evocative. We were Dwell then DwellBaby, DwellTable etc. so in 2008 we just wrapped it up into DwellStudio. Our logo is just like a signature and that is intentional because we put so much into each design we want to sign it!
WE LOVE THAT YOU HAVE ADDED FURNITURE TO THE BABY/KIDS COLLECTION. WE LOVE THE CENTURY CRIB AND DRESSER. WILL YOU BE ADDING MORE PIECES TO THE COLLECTION?
Yes! We are very excited about expanding our furniture offering, and have some new styles coming soon that I love. We have just reviewed the prototypes and they are lovely.
The brand has grown so much over the past few years. Where do you see the brand in the next five years?
We are committed to making DwellStudio a lifestyle company that provides customers everything for their homes. I definitely see a flagship retail store within the next 12 months. We're excited about opportunities in some new categories for us but it's too early to talk about it!
WHAT SHOULD OUR READERS/CLIENTS KNOW ABOUT DWELLSTUDIO THAT MAKES IT SPECIAL?
How completely committed to quality and design every person that works at DwellStudio is. I'm very proud of the quality standards we've set amongst ourselves and still strive to beat them with every product that leaves our doors.
WHERE DO YOU LIVE?
In New York City's SoHo neighborhood.
IF WE WERE VISITING YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST FOR US TO SEE/DO/EAT/SHOP?
See: the beautiful architecture of the old buildings and the glistening cobblestone streets - especially at dawn and dusk. Stunning!
Do: take your kids swimming in Thompson playground.
Eat: the possibilities are endless but you can't go wrong with Balthazar!
Shop: again, endless possibilities but I love Uniqlo, Kirna Zabete and Makie for the kiddies.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU STARTED DWELLSTUDIO?
When I left Parsons I went to work for two companies. The first was Isaac Mizrahi where I worked in the fabric department. I learned so much about construction, amazing European textile manufacturing, design and color. It was an immersion into the best fabric mills in the world. I also wanted to try something big so I also worked at the Gap. That was also a formative experience. At that time, the Gap was run by Mickey Drexler and was a well-oiled machine. I learned not only design but process, manufacturing and most importantly merchandizing. While at the Gap, I got the opportunity to go and work at a home furnishings company in New York called Portico. I was given carte blanche to design everything from soap to sofas. I just fell in love with interiors. In a way - I feel like we design and redesign our interiors today - the same way we think about fashion. We are constantly tweaking our spaces.
WHAT/WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST SOURCE OF INSPIRATION?
My inspiration comes from all over the place - travel, art galleries, flea markets, my children, hotels...everywhere really. I just file things away in my brain and they all meld together in my mental blender and the result is our collections. I think being in New York has decided advantages in that you get to see emerging trends first. I just keep my eyes open.
