Santa baby...slip a couple of these under the tree for us! These stylish and innovative wooden toys are for the young and young at heart. Meet Carl Zedig, founder of Playsam.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE PLAYSAM?
I was a marketing manager for big group of factories in Sweden that provided employment for disabled workers. I had an idea that we should create a brand to help employers feel proud of what they did.
TELL US THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME?
The name of the group was Samhall. So SAM and PLAY created PLAYSAM. I met Hans Christer Ericson, a super talented art director, and gave him my vision. He created the logotype and the whole graphical environment for the new company. Then we had Ulf Hanses who came to me with all these archetypes.
WE ARE OBSESSED WITH THIS COLLECTION OF STYLISH WOODEN TOYS. HARD TO PICK A FAVORITE BUT IF WE MUST THE ROADSTER SAAB WOULD HAVE TO BE IT. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE?
My favorite is the Enzo Motorbike with sidecar.
WHAT SHOULD OUR READERS KNOW ABOUT PLAYSAM THAT MAKES IT SPECIAL?
It is hard for me to tell. I just do the best I can and surround myself with talent.
WHERE IS THE BRAND BASED?
In a small town on the east coast of Sweden called Kalmar.
IF WE WERE VISITING YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST FOR US TO SEE/DO/EAT/SHOP?
First, tour Kalmar and visit the old castle and have a nice meal at Kalmar Port Restaurant. Then take a tour to Oland, a wonderful island 140 km long, one of the most popular tourist areas in Sweden. Then go to Orrefors/Kosta Boda the glass county to buy crystal.
WHAT IS THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU RECEIVED?
I follow my father’s way of living. He never had to use the word “honest”. He was.
WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU STARTED PLAYSAM?
I have been in many businesses. Looking back, I was the black sheep in the family (we are seven sisters and brothers) and no one could guess that I would have a proper job.
WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SOURCE OF INSPIRATION?
My gut. I get an immediate feeling of what is right or wrong and then I build on it. I think I get this from my mother.
FIVE THINGS YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT.
My job. My tiny kitchen. My old country farm. My family. And a glass of nice wine.
