We love Indian inspired hand-blocked prints. And no one does them better for little ones than Rikshaw. A must have for the bohemian chic baby!
Meet Catherine, the owner and founder of Rikshaw, and see why we love her and the brand so much.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE RIKSHAW DESIGN?
I had left working a corporate job and wanted to try something on my own. After visiting India, I knew I would have my line based on the art of hand-block printing and incorporate fun colors and whimsical motifs.
WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME?
Rikshaws left an impression on me after visiting India, and I spelled it incorrectly on purpose.
WE ARE OBSESSED WITH ALL OF THE PRINTS FROM THE COLLECTION, BUT HAVE A SOFT SPOT FOR THE TAJ PRINT. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE?
I would have to say the Lali or the Bombay, they are two different color combinations of my logo. But the anchor and crab give me a huge smile when I see them on little ones!
WHAT SHOULD OUR READERS KNOW ABOUT RIKSHAW THAT MAKES IT SPECIAL?
Rikshaw Design is special because it's all hand-block printed on Indian cotton voile. Many companies are creating the "block print" look but its screen printed. I am proud that every meter of our fabric is all printed by hand and shows all those wonderful imperfections!
THE COLLECTION HAS GROWN SO MUCH OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS. WHAT SHOULD WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE?
More women's and accessories---lots of fun ideas in development!
WHERE IS THE BRAND BASED?
We have our office in the sunny, charming town of San Anselmo, CA., right outside of San Francisco.
IF WE WERE VISITING YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST FOR US TO SEE/DO/EAT/SHOP?
My favorite Mexican restaurant is right across the street, Marinitas. They have delish and excellent margaritas! There are some of the prettiest hikes all around, head up to Point Reyes and get lost on a trail along the Pacific Coast, shop at Summer House in Mill Valley, or Beach House Style in Fairfax.
WHAT IS THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOUR RECEIVED?
"Just sell one." Seems simple but it keeps you moving forward without getting bogged down in the obstacles you will ultimately face.
WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU STARTED RIKSHAW?
I worked as a Buyer of textiles for Pottery Barn and before that I was a Merchandiser for a dot com.
WHAT/WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST SOURCE OF INSPIRATION?
This is a hard question for me to narrow down. I am constantly inspired through everyday things, window shopping, a coffee table book, a colorful plate of food, music and blogs/magazines.
FIVE THINGS YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT.
My snuggly and pudgy dog, Jumby. Music. My ring from India. Kombucha. Chapstick.
