Home sweet home! We have been drooling over these stunning wallpapers for little ones for some time now. Fresh. Modern. Classic. Cool. And so stylish we want to hang them in all of our nests. Meet Emma founder and designer of Hibou Home, designer wallpaper for stylish kids young and old.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE HIBOU HOME?
I couldn't find any wallpaper I liked for my childrens’ bedrooms. Everything I came across was just a bit too 'childish' and I didn't like the garish primary colours. We were renovating our house and I'd spent a lot of time and effort on the interior design scheme so I didn't want to compromise when it came to the kids' rooms. It got me thinking about the gap in the market for stylish, sophisticated childrens' wallpapers and that's how Hibou Home was born.
WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU STARTED HIBOU HOME?
Something very different! My career was in automotive industry working for Jaguar Land Rover. I started out as a Buyer and then moved into Sales and Marketing and Business Planning. I learned an awful lot but it was all very corporate and quite stifling - what I do now is much more fun and rewarding.
WHAT WAS THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU RECEIVED?
Use your skills and experience to do something you really have a passion for because it shows! Also, if you have a vision of what you want to achieve, stick to it. I wanted to create designs I would be happy to buy and I just hoped other people would like them too. When Liberty London became our first stockist, I knew I was onto something!
WHAT IS NEXT FOR HIBOU HOME?
I'm busy working on developing a range of matching fabrics for the current collection and also designing the next wallpaper collection, so very hectic!
WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT ALL OF YOUR PRINTS AND CANNOT WAIT TO USE THEM IN SOME OF THE FUTURE NESTS THAT WE DESIGN. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PRINT?
I love them all for different reasons, but if you are going to make me choose, it would have to be Enchanted Wood. It is such a timeless design and appeals to all ages (children and grown-ups alike!) so it's the perfect wallpaper for the nursery years and beyond. I would have loved this on my walls as a child.
WHAT SHOULD OUR READERS/CLIENTS KNOW ABOUT HIBOU HOME THAT MAKES IT SPECIAL?
I think people are really drawn to the sophisticated simplicity of the designs, the stylish, muted colour palette and the quality of the paper too. The particular printing process we use for the wallpaper means it's more expensive to make but it gives the designs a real depth of colour and a wonderful matte, chalky finish.
WHERE DO YOU LIVE?
I live in a 500-year old timber framed house in a little village in Kent, south-east England. It's very quaint and very rural but it's only an hour into London so I can easily get my big city fix when I need it!
IF WE WERE VISITING YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST FOR US TO SEE/DO/EAT/SHOP?
Gosh, there's something for everyone really. Culture-wise there are lots of castles - Leeds and Hever to name a couple and Canterbury Cathedral so there's history aplenty. For the foodies, we have several local Michelin-starred restaurants (The Curlew is a favourite) plus the fantastic Chapel Down winery on our doorstep. The coast is only half an hour away - Camber Sands is a huge sandy beach and cycling in Bedgebury Forest is great fun. I love exploring the little antique shops and boutiques amongst the cobbled streets in the ancient town of Rye, followed by a proper English afternoon tea at the George in Rye. What more could you ask for?
WHAT/WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST SOURCE OF INSPIRATION?
I get all my design inspiration from my childhood memories really. I had an idyllic childhood - building dens, riding ponies, playing in the countryside round my home and when I wasn't doing that I was reading (usually sat in a tree!). The classic children’s books and fairytales I read then are a big influence on what I design now.
FIVE THINGS YOU EACH CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT
My fabulous husband and children (obviously!). A good book - I love a gripping page turner. Sunshine - preferably whilst sipping a nice glass of red in the South of France. Long walks in the countryside - I do all my best thinking on walks. Lancome mascara - never leave the house without it!
