MEET WENDY, DYLAN'S MOMMY

Meet Wendy, Dylan's mommy, who called upon our VIRTUALLY CHIC service to decorate his nursery.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO ENLIST THE SERVICES OF A DECORATOR FOR YOUR NURSERY?

This is our first baby and I could not wait to start putting together his nursery!  I wanted the room to be unique and special and customized just for him, not something “cookie cutter” picked from a catalog. However, once I started looking at all of the options out there and realized the amount of “layering” it entailed (e.g., walls, floors, windows, etc.), I began to feel overwhelmed. While I love interior design, I didn’t trust that I had the time or talent to design the entire room from scratch and get it just right. Bottom line: I wanted it to be perfect, and I needed an expert!

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT SISSY+MARLEY’S SERVICES?

I probably spent three months browsing the internet to find inspiration for the nursery, including various design blogs, interior designer portfolios, and furniture stores. Sissy+Marley’s nurseries came up several times and were always my absolute favorites. The rooms felt fresh, fun and chic, unlike anything I’d ever seen. They were baby friendly without being too “cutesy” or fussy.  Once I saw their portfolio and read about the e-design process, I knew I had to work with them.

WHY E-DESIGN VERSUS FULL SERVICE DESIGN?

I was initially attracted to the efficiency of the e-design process; I couldn’t believe that Sissy+Marley delivers fully designed rooms in just 4 weeks. When I have used full service interior design services in the past, the process seemed to take forever and required a lot of my time and input. I also chose this tier of service because (I thought) I wanted some flexibility. I thought I would be inspired by Sissy+Marley’s room ideas but that I would incorporate my own design aesthetic and some of my own favorite pieces. However, I was so blown away by their design that I ended up getting everything they recommended. The full service option would also have worked well, but I did enjoy being part of the process, i.e., sourcing the pieces, finding the best deals on the various items, installation.  It made me feel more connected to the room.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE E-DESIGN PROCESS?

I have worked with many decorators before, but this was like nothing I’ve ever experienced. The process was fast, easy and the Sissy+Marley team made it so much fun.   As a start, I sent Chelsea images of my favorite rooms I found online, plus a mix of products that I really loved (e.g., the JA Zebra Rug, the Oeuf furniture set) and pictures of other rooms in my house.  I also answered a short series of questions regarding my style and hopes for the room.  She ran with it, and 4 weeks later they had dreamed up this beautiful nursery, down to the last accessory.  I thought things would end there, but Sissy+Marley were there for me for several months after the delivery of the design book.  They connected me with vendors, responded to questions and concerns about installation/placement, etc. and were regularly sending me new ideas for things that would work in the room.  There were one or two products they recommended that I wasn’t sure of (mainly due to size/proportions), and within a day or two they offered alternative products that worked better in the space and that I liked just as much.  For the price, I never expected I’d receive so much time and attention from the team as I did.  Their passion for what they do and their commitment to their customers is unmatched.

WHAT DETERMINED YOUR NURSERY BUDGET?

Tough question.  I knew I was willing to spend a good amount on this room, especially if I felt the majority of pieces would work for several years (this was another reason I love Sissy+Marley’s style!).  I ended up working backwards from what I thought a customized nursery would cost. I had done some research ahead of time to see the range of prices in the furniture sets (e.g., Oeuf vs. DucDuc vs. Nurseryworks), gliders and rugs, and also priced out what some looks would cost in a few catalogs and websites like Serena and Lily and Restoration Hardware.  At the end of the day, however, I didn’t want to give Sissy+Marley too many limitations.  I wanted to see what the perfect room would look like, what it would cost, and only cut back if I didn’t love it or if it were way out of our price range.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF DYLAN’S COMPLETED NURSERY?

It is perfection!  I couldn’t be more thrilled with the result. I told Sissy+Marley I wanted something modern but whimsical, a comfortable and stylish room for my son to rest, dream and play.  This is exactly what they delivered.  Every piece is so unique and special, which is just what I wanted for my little boy.  On top of that, it’s perfectly functional!  What’s been most exciting is how much Dylan loves his room, even at 10 weeks old.  He’s fascinated by all of the colorful wooden toys and books, loves his little French bunny in the crib, and really responds to the pictures above his changing table as well as the letters and lighting above the crib. It makes feeding, sleeping and changing him a lot easier and much more fun!  He’s always smiling in there.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE IN THE ROOM?

This is nearly impossible, as there are so many pieces in the nursery that I love.  The wallpaper is probably the single most impactful design element in the room – it completely transformed the space when it was installed.  It’s sophisticated and serene but still very sweet and playful.  I think the Jonathan Adler rug is also a real stand-out and adds a great pop of color to the space.  The accessories are also so unique and different, my favorite being the handmade gazelle by Tamar Mogendorff. It’s so beautiful and magical, and I love how it watches over my son while he sleeps.  It brought me to tears when we put it up. Sorry, just one more - the Jonathan Adler sconces are amazing!

WHAT ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE TO OTHERS CONSIDERING E-DESIGN?

Don’t hesitate!!  The Sissy+Marley team “wowed me” at every turn, from their brilliant design to their access to unique products, and their amazing customer service.  Based on other designers I’ve worked with this was by far the best experience and greatest value for the money.  I cannot wait to work with them on Dylan’s playroom next year!

Thanks Wendy!
