SISSY+MARLEY LOVES NORMAN & JULES

We are beyond excited to introduce you to NORMAN & JULES Toy Shop...our go-to for gorgeous goodies from around the world. Stocked with handcrafted toys and imaginative decor, we never walk away empty handed. Take a stroll over to their Brooklyn shop or new e- shop, we promise you a drool-worthy experience.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN UP A TOY SHOP?

Avi and I both love beautiful well-crafted goods. In the early days of our relationship we discovered it was a common dream to own a shop. There were a couple of different ideas, but once the idea of a well curated toy shop came up, we knew we had to make it happen. There are so many incredible analog toys to aid in a child’s development that weren’t available in our area of Brooklyn. With all the like-minded families in Park Slope, we had a pretty good feeling that our idea would be well received.

WHAT DID YOU BOTH DO BEFORE YOU OPENED NORMAN & JULES?

Courtney: I spent 16 years in the apparel industry as a tastemaker for over a dozen brands. I spent my last six years with a fortune 500 company as the Manager of Global Trends and Insights, which basically means I was out and about discovering branding trends for all the major brands and retailers in the world.

Avi: I ran my own design firm for 10+ years and spent my last 4 years as the Creative Director for a major men’s brand.

WHAT WAS THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU RECEIVED?

Hire a bookkeeper and follow your own intuition when making decisions for your business. Definitely hire a good bookkeeper!

WHAT'S NEXT FOR NORMAN & JULES?

Developing our 800 square foot backyard into one of Brooklyn’s premiere outdoor play and event spaces. We recently launched a community crowd funding campaign to build an amazing event space for the community to use and enjoy. We will have birthday parties, story time, playgroups, concerts and all sorts of different events. It’s really exciting for us!

WE LOVE YOUR SHOP AND ARE OBSESSED WITH ALL OF THE GORGEOUS GOODIES. DO YOU HAVE FAVORITE ITEMS IN THE SHOP?

Courtney: It’s so hard to say especially because we just finished up with 2 days at NYNOW. We have some really great products coming in. Some of my favorite items in the store now are: Lieschen Mueller Cat and Bear Dolls, Alanquo Dolls, all of Lucky Boy Sunday, Bow & Arrow by Sketch + John, Fagus Trucks and Little City Houses Building Set by Grimm’s.

Avi: Wooh, that’s a hard one. I’m having a whole lot of fun building Tegu tower displays in our window, but I love a lot of things in here.

WHAT SHOULD OUR READERS/CLIENTS KNOW ABOUT NORMAN & JULES THAT MAKES IT SPECIAL?

What makes Norman & Jules special is that we spend all of our free time researching toys from around the world in order to bring our customers special treasures that aren’t found elsewhere. Another really cool thing is the growing number of local vendors that are stocking our shelves. We love that!

WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

We live in Park Slope, Brooklyn, a block and a half from the shop! It’s a tough commute.

IF WE WERE VISITING YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST FOR US TO SEE/DO/EAT/SHOP?

See: Just walk the neighborhood. There is so much charming architecture and plenty of wonderful shops.

Do: Explore the new play ground in Prospect Park that is made from repurposed trees lost in Hurricane Sandy. It is such an amazing, imaginative place for the kiddos to explore.

Eat: Gather, Pork Slope, Milk Bar

Shop: Bird, Poppy, Claypot and Sterling Place, but there are just so many others — it would be hard to list them all.

WHAT/WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST SOURCE OF INSPIRATION?

Our 3 year old daughter, Charley. She had a hard entry into this world, but she just pushed through it with superhero will power and is now an incredibly strong, imaginative, sweet little girl.

FIVE THINGS YOU EACH CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT?

Courtney: Avi, Charley, Beach, Exercise, Good Food & Wine

Avi: Aside from Courtney and Charley...Chicken wings, My iphone, Our cozy leather couch, A good run, Collecting

Thanks Courtney and Avi!

SISSY+MARLEY LOVES COLETTE BREAM

Let's play! Imaginative play is such an important part of childhood and that is why we love Colette Bream. Her collection of whimsical, playful, and oh-so gorgeous creations are simply dreamy. Meet Colette Bream and fall instantly in love with her and her work.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE COLETTE BREAM?

My daughter, Skye. What started as a creative outlet (me making little toys and accessories for her room) grew into a full-time business.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU STARTED COLETTE BREAM?

Pretty much right after graduating from my University, I moved from my hometown in Europe to the United States. I ended up working in an accounting department of a small company.

WHAT WAS THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU RECEIVED?

Don't wait for things to be perfect. Don't let your current conditions (no matter how “off” they seem from ideal) stop you from taking that first step.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR COLETTE BREAM?

Hopefully, expanding and increasing our stock to the point where we don't have to turn down most of the boutiques that are interested in carrying our products.

WE LOVE YOUR COLLECTION AND ARE OBSESSED WITH THE STAR PILLOWS.  DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PIECE IN THE COLLECTION?

Thanks! Actually, I don’t have one favorite piece. However, I do (at the moment) have a favorite combination of two pieces as a set. My “Knitted Portrait of a Parisienne” together with the large “Scalloped Rainbow Flower” shaped pillow.

WHAT SHOULD OUR READERS/CLIENTS KNOW ABOUT COLETTE BREAM THAT MAKES IT SPECIAL?

My work doesn't end with my designing of a piece. All my knitted products are also made by me, personally. I use 100% Scottish Lambswool, which is rather tough and costly to procure here in the US.  I find it very rewarding to watch new objects being created from just a “long piece of string”.

Also, our bedding is crafted from 100% certified organic cotton and printed with eco-friendly non-toxic water based inks. Then it is sewn by me in my studio here in the US.

In our little way we like to help our economy and use American suppliers whenever possible. All our items are made here in the US. We support conscious consumerism and appreciate every customer and client who carries similar values as we do as a company.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

On the East coast of the United States -in the beautiful Chesapeake Bay area - in a house neatly tucked among old tall trees (oaks and maples and beechwoods).

IF WE WERE VISITING YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST FOR US TO SEE/DO/EAT/SHOP?

See - Aerial view of the Bay.

Do – Everyone’s lives are so busy and hectic nowadays - I would like for you to stop and relax in the hammock. But if you insist on doing something, then we have some beautiful bike trails around here.

Eat - Maryland's finest blue crabs!

Shop - There are plenty of local vintage shops with treasures waiting to be found.

WHAT/WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST SOURCE OF INSPIRATION?

Nature (flora and fauna of all varieties) and the wonderful world of childhood.

5 THINGS YOU EACH CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT?

My husband, my daughter, coffee, some yarn and books.

Thanks Colette!

SISSY+MARLEY LOVES WINTER WATER FACTORY

Brooklyn-based.  Organic clothing.  Graphic prints.  Need we say more?

We just love Winter Water Factory and know you will too.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE WINTER WATER FACTORY?

From a very young age, I was always obsessed with prints, patterns and textiles. I got this tiny bright orange sewing machine for Christmas one year, and started sewing clothes for my dolls. I’ve been crafting and making things since kindergarten, and was always really into mass-production, figuring out how to make not just one but 50 of something really efficiently. When a friend of mine and I started sharing a studio with a full screen-printing set-up a few years ago, we set up a small printing table and everything developed from there. The original Winterwasserfabrik was invented in Germany in the early eighties, when my sister and I started bottling up melted snow and tried to sell it to our parents as Winterwasser. They didn’t buy it, but we had a great time running our little factory.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE YOU STARTED WINTER WATER FACTORY?

I went to Medical School in Germany (I even graduated, but never practiced), then worked for an internet start-up as a medical marketing manager before joining Martha Stewart, where I still work during the week. I’m now the Deputy Design Director for Martha Stewart Crafts, her line of craft products.

WHAT WAS THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU RECEIVED?

Work with what you have – yes, you should obsess about the details when it matters, but sometimes it’s best to work with what you have, and you’ll be surprised how far you can go with that. I think it’s also really important to work with people that you like and trust, and foster those relationships, with your customers, your suppliers, the people that work for them, the people that work for you. It pays to treat them right!

WHAT'S NEXT FOR WINTER WATER FACTORY?

We always have a long list of areas we want to expand into, and it’s hard to choose. We just did a limited edition women’s line, which we’ve done in the past, and there will definitely be more of that. We’ve been thinking about Pajamas a lot lately, and more home products, wallpaper, textiles...

We love your collection and are currently obsessed with the high seas hoodie.   Do you have a favorite piece in the collection?

We love the hoodies! I want to make some for adults so I can wear them. I usually have a favorite print, I think the confetti came out great this fall. For individual pieces, the Hoodies Dress in Winter Forest and the Aurora Dress in Leaves and Berries Navy & orange are definitely high on my list.

WHAT SHOULD OUR READERS/CLIENTS KNOW ABOUT WINTER WATER FACTORY THAT MAKES IT SPECIAL?

I think the designs and how much thought goes into that is what you see right away. We like to think about what kids like and get excited about. But to us it is also so very important how and where our products are made. We go through great lengths to get our fabric milled and printed in the US, and we work with a factory right here in Brooklyn that we love. They don’t do piece work, meaning they get paid by the hour and not by how many pieces they can finish really fast, which makes for happier workers and better quality. It’s down the street from our house so we really know the people who make our stuff. I always bake a cake for them when they finish up a big production run! So when you are buying our products, you are supporting a community, and giving people jobs. We also use certified organic cotton on all of our products.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

In the Sunset Park neighborhood in Brooklyn NY, in a small house with my husband and our 3 cats. We love the neighborhood, so many of the people that live on our street grew up there and their families have been there for generations. It’s a really great, down to earth Brooklyn neighborhood with lots of great characters. And lots of stray cats!

IF WE WERE VISITING YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST FOR US TO SEE/DO/EAT/SHOP?

Tacos el Bronco is our favorite for authentic Mexican tacos. They run a food truck on 5th Avenue every night, and also have a restaurant on 4th Ave and 45th Street. Melody Lanes is a great bowling alley, but the real treat is going to the bar in there on a weekend night when Pete is behind the bar, you’ll have to meet him to believe it. We just got the “regulars club” card at Toby’s, a pub with great brick oven Pizza on 6th avenue and 21st Street, and there’s my favorite favorite bakery, Laurentino’s on 21st and 5th Ave. They bake everything fresh in the back of the shop, just like my Grandfather used to be set up back in Germany, and the pignoli and chocolate mouse cake are amazing, along with everything else!

WHAT/WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST SOURCE OF INSPIRATION?

Vera Neuman, Orla Kiely, Wiener Werkstaette, Sister Corita, and everyone who does what they believe in and makes beautiful things. People who are not in it just for the big bucks but want to do it right, make things locally and think about the impact their business has on the planet. We work with a freight company that is employee owned, which I find amazing. Anyone who does their part to make their community a better place. I often feel so powerless about all the messed up things going on in the world, but I think the best you can do is shape the world around you and be an example of how things should be done, and change will spread from there.

5 THINGS YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT…

Water, oxygen, food, shelter and other people – I know I am being a smart ass, but when you really think about it, there aren’t that many “things” you couldn’t live without.  For 5 things I wouldn’t like so much to live without, it would be: books, a sketchbook and pencil, chocolate and yarn to knit.
